Description
152 and 154 South Road is a former school, now divided into two houses, dated 1653 on the lintel and altered over time. The building is constructed of roughcast brick with a common brick rear and features a slate roof. It has a rectangular plan with three bays and stands two storeys high.
No. 154, on the left, has a single-storey gabled porch made of squared sandstone, which includes a segmental-headed doorway. This porch features a large rectangular datestone with an inscription in raised lettering that reads:
"THIS FREE SCHOOL WAS ERECTED AND BUILT AT THE PROPER COSTS AND CHARGES OF JAMES FLETCHER OF LONDON MARCANT AND AT THE REQUEST OF MISTRIS JANE FLETCHER HIS WIFE WHO WAS BORNE IN THIS TOWNE. JUNE THE FOURTEENTH ANNODONI 1653."
Each floor of the porch has one window on either side, all of which are 19th-century four-pane sashes. No. 152, to the right, has two similar but smaller windows on each floor. The building features a ridge chimney at the junction and a gable chimney at the right end. The rear of the building is of less interest.
Inside, the interiors have been altered, but No. 154 retains two stopped quarter-round moulded beams, while No. 152 has a roughly-hewn chamfered beam that is cambered in the center.
