Description
The tower and spire of the former Methodist Church, which has been demolished, along with an adjoining balustrade, were built around 1905 by the architectural firm Waddington, Son and Dunkerley. The structure features coursed squared sandstone at the base and sandstone ashlar above. It has a square plan and consists of two tall stages. The tower includes a moulded plinth, an impost band, and an offset to the second stage that is accentuated by diagonal shafts rising to form pinnacles. The parapet is decorated with geometric patterns, and the spire is splay-footed with small flying buttresses extending from the pinnacles.
The west doorway is two-centred arched with a deeply moulded surround and double doors that have strap hinges. Above the doorway, there is a small two-light window with louvres and corner shafts. The belfry stage is elaborate, featuring a thin triangular shaft at the center of each side, flanked by two-centred arched belfry windows that have moulded surrounds, ogival tracery, and deeply-recessed louvred openings. The balustrade, which protects a raised terraced forecourt, is designed with a geometric pattern.
