Description
Ingham House with an attached barn is a farmhouse, now used as a house, dating from the 18th century, with the barn likely from the 16th century. The building has been altered and is now used as a warehouse. It features coursed sandstone and stone slate roofs across two levels. The house has two bays and two storeys, with a central ridge chimney and two square windows on each floor, all of which have altered glazing. There is a lean-to porch at the right end, adjacent to the projecting barn. The rear of the house has a full-height lean-to in a similar position but is otherwise of less interest.
The barn consists of three bays and is aisled on both sides, featuring a recessed wagon entrance in the center of the front. While the exterior of the barn is of less interest, the interior is notable for its complete post-and-truss timber frame of high quality. It includes three frames, with the third frame positioned approximately 30 centimeters from the stone gable wall. The stone stylobates are about one meter high, with braces supporting the tie-beams and aisle plates. Intermediate posts support scarf joints in the aisle plates of the third bay, along with arch braces from these posts. The roof features king-post trusses with angle struts, two pairs of large trenched overlapped purlins for the nave, and two pairs for each aisle. Carpenter's marks are visible, and the first bay has been partitioned off for inclusion in the dwelling. This building is an important example of the surviving aisled barns that are characteristic of this area of the county.
