Description
High Halstead Farmhouse is a farmhouse, likely built around 1600, that was in the process of being converted into a house at the time of the survey in 1985. The building features large squared sandstone in watershot coursing, with quoins, and a graduated stone slate roof. It has two bays, with the south gable facing the road; this end was formerly extended to the south but was rebuilt in the 19th century. There is a short wing on the west side, which was demolished during the survey for rebuilding.
The farmhouse is two storeys high. The east front has a ground floor with a recessed king-mullioned window that has 8 lights, featuring ovolo-and-fillet mullions and a hoodmould. On the first floor, there are two similarly recessed 3-light windows. The wall to the left has been rebuilt and includes a sashed window at ground floor level. A 19th-century cottage has been added at the right end, and there are 19th-century chimneys at the left gable and the junction.
The south gable wall has an altered or inserted door. Before its demolition, the short west wing had a large moulded depressed-arched doorway near the right corner, a blocked doorway near the left corner, and on the first floor, a blocked opening with a hoodmould and a small chamfered opening to the left. There was also a wide chimney on the gable and a lean-to addition in the re-entrant angle to the left.
Inside, the building has been altered, but ongoing work revealed a partition wall in the wing that exposed the remains of a triple-arched structure. This includes a wide segmental-headed fireplace in the center, a semi-circular arched doorway to the left (aligned with the former outer doorway), and part of a similar arch to the right. The former wing is likely to have been a firehood that incorporated the principal entrance.
