Description

Lower Bottin Farmhouse is probably an early 17th-century farmhouse, altered subsequently. It is constructed of roughly squared course sandstone with small quoins, although the rear is of random rubble, and has a stone slate roof. The building has a rectangular, three-bay plan, facing south. Entry is via a through-passage at the east end, originally positioned behind a firehood. The farmhouse has two storeys. A large, modern, single-storey, flat-roofed porch has been added to the right-hand end, obscuring the original main doorway. Windows are recessed and now lack mullions, with the exception of a window on the left-hand side of the ground floor, which was originally four lights but now has just two, retaining the central mullion. There are two further ground floor windows. Upstairs, there are four windows, originally three, two, and two lights respectively. A rebuilt chimney is located near the right-hand gable. On the rear elevation, a former rear doorway to the through-passage is visible, marked by a large rectangular lintel, but is now a window. Other windows on the rear may have been fire windows, and two near the west end were formerly mullioned, but have since been altered like those at the front. The interior has not been inspected.
