Description
The ice house, located at the northeast corner of the grounds of the former Ormerod House, is likely from the early 19th century and constructed of sandstone. It is built underground on elevated ground at the edge of a steep slope. Access is through a plain doorway in the retaining wall of the slope, which leads into an L-shaped vaulted passage. At the inner end of this passage, there is a semi-circular-arched doorway that features the remains of a protective iron gate, opening into the upper part of a very large egg-shaped vessel, which is said to be 20 feet high.
