Description

House. Dated 1777 by deeds, and subsequently altered. The house is constructed of coursed sandstone with dressings of the same material, and has a stone slate roof. It is a double-depth, two-bay building. The architectural style is symmetrical, featuring classical details such as a plinth, a ground floor sill band, raised quoins, gable chimneys, gable copings with kneelers, and a front entrance reached by two semicircular stone steps. The central entrance has a board door set within a shouldered architrave and pediment. Above the entrance is a rectangular window with a similar architrave. Other windows consist of two coupled vertical rectangular windows per floor, all with raised, plain surrounds, and altered glazing. The left gable wall is watershot and has a rear doorway, as well as a three-light flush-mullion window on each floor to the rear. A blocked Venetian window is located in the attic. The right gable has a ground floor lean-to, which appears to be the remnant of an earlier, smaller building, outlined on the gable wall. There is also a blocked two-light flush-mullion window in the attic. The rear elevation features a large Venetian stair window with a triple keystone, and glazing bars forming Y-tracery in the head. The interior contains a dogleg flying stone staircase with a waved cyma-moulding soffit to the upper flight, stick balusters (some damaged or missing), and a ramped handrail. There are fielded panel doors, fluted architraves to the stair window and passage archway. A built-in cupboard with shouldered panels (damaged) is found in the front right ground floor room. Two original fireplaces with shouldered surrounds, moulded entablatures and cornices are on the first floor, one containing an iron hob grate.
