Description
A row of thirteen cottages dates from around 1820 to 1830 and was built as part of Dugdale’s Lowerhouse mill. The cottages are constructed of coursed squared sandstone, although Nos. 276, 286, and 298 are rendered, and No. 294 is painted. The roofs are stone slate, with Nos. 274-278 and No. 282 having composition tiles, and No. 280 having Welsh slate. The chimneys are mostly rendered, and have water-tabling and cornices. The cottages form a long, double-depth range following an obtusely-angled plan, with No. 288 canted back and featuring a convex curved front. Each cottage is single-fronted, with two windows to the front elevation except for Nos. 284 and 298, which have three. A continuous square-cut gutter cornice slopes slightly from left to right. Doorways are located to the left, and feature monolith jambs and lintels, which are mostly plain with a small, stopped chamfer, although some are chisel-dressed. The doorways have been altered. The windows are vertical-rectangular, with raised sills and run-out rectangular lintels, and have altered glazing. A ground-floor window at No. 290 has been enlarged and replaced with a small-paned bow window. The interiors have not been inspected. The row forms a group with Nos 304-8 to the right, and Nos 295-317 on the opposite side of the road.
