Description
Back Oak Cottage is a cottage dated 1842, located on Lower Rosegrove Lane in Burnley. It has been altered and recently renovated. The cottage is constructed of coursed, rock-faced sandstone with quoins and has a stone slate roof. It is built in a Jacobean style, with a double-fronted plan designed back-to-back against Old Oak Cottage.
The cottage is two storeys high with three bays, arranged symmetrically, and the central bay projects slightly and is gabled. The central bay originally featured a 4-centred arched doorway, now covered by a newly added gabled porch. Above the original doorway was a cross-window with a chamfered reveal and a hood-mould. In the gable above is a heart-shaped shield, inscribed "R B / 1842" and surmounted by a lion mask. Large rectangular windows with chamfered reveals, hood-moulds, and 4-pane top-hung casements imitating sash windows are found in the flanking bays. Chimneys are located at both gables and along the ridge. The left gable has a large window on the ground floor, similar to those at the front, and a smaller window above. The interior of the cottage has not been inspected. It forms a group with Old Oak Cottage.
