Description
26-34 King Street is a terraced row of four townhouses, built in 1851 and altered over time. The first two houses are numbered 26 and 28, while 30 and 32 have been converted into offices. The buildings are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with sandstone dressings and feature a slate roof. Each house has a double-depth plan, is single-fronted, and includes back extensions, with service passages located between Nos 28 and 30, and Nos 32 and 34.
The design reflects a late Georgian style, with three storeys and a window arrangement of 3+2+2+3, which was formerly symmetrical. The eaves are supported by wooden brackets. No. 34 has undergone alterations at the ground and first floors. The doorway for No. 26/28 is positioned to the left, while Nos 30 and 32 have their doorways centrally located, all of which are round-headed with altered doors and plain fanlights. The service doorways are also round-headed and lower in height.
The first three houses feature two-storey canted bay windows with dentilled wooden cornices and pediments at the center, and most windows are sashed with glazing bars, except for the first floor of No. 26. The windows above the service doorways are either blocked or blind. The chimneys are large and located on the front and rear slopes at the junctions of the pairs. The rear and interiors of the buildings were not inspected. This row forms a group with Nos 21 to 25 opposite, and with Nos 7 to 11 and 13 and 15 to the right.
