Description
47 King Street is a former Wigan Savings Bank, built in 1891 by H Verity and undergoing conversion at the time of inspection in June 1992. The building features a sandstone ashlar facade, with the sides and rear made of yellow stock brick, and a slate roof that is concealed by a parapet. It has a rectangular plan positioned at right angles to the street and is designed in the Italian palazzo style.
The structure has two storeys, with a basement at the rear, and is arranged in a 1:3 bay configuration. The ground floor is rusticated, with alternate courses that are vermiculated. At the first floor, there are Corinthian columns paired on either side of the first bay and at the right-hand corner, along with a plain frieze, a dentilled and modillioned cornice, and a balustraded parapet. The first bay features a square-headed doorway accessed by four steps, flanked by narrow side windows within a tripartite architrave topped with a pediment that contains a carved shield. Above, there is a Venetian window at the first floor. The other bays have square-headed windows at the ground floor, which were boarded at the time of inspection, featuring vermiculated voussoirs and cartouche keystones. The first floor has round-headed windows with balustrading. Sturdy cast-iron railings are positioned at right angles to the left of the entrance.
The interior was undergoing remodelling during the survey in June 1992.
