Description

The Former Westwood Estate Office is a building located on Rodney Street in Wigan, likely dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, with a remodel completed in 1896, as indicated by the date above the doorway. The structure is built of red brick with freestone and terracotta dressings, while the sides and rear are made of coursed squared sandstone. It features a slate roof and has a double-depth, double-fronted plan with a back extension, showcasing a domestic style with Baroque elements.

The exterior consists of two storeys and three bays, arranged symmetrically. It has plain pilasters on both floors, a string course above the ground floor, a moulded cornice, and a balustraded parapet over the second floor. The outer bays are topped with steeply-pitched semi-conical roofs that have finials. The central feature is an elliptical-arched doorway with a moulded and banded head, a frieze inscribed with "WESTWOOD / ESTATE OFFICE," and heavy panelled divided doors. This doorway is framed by an elaborate Renaissance-style architrave supported by two free-standing columns, with a moulded cornice and an upstand featuring swan-neck supporters and a lettered plaque that includes a shield and monogram alongside the date "1896." Above this doorway, there is a sashed window framed by simple pilasters. The outer bays are adorned with two-storey canted bay windows featuring sashed glazing, with the ground floor bays enriched similarly to the doorway. There are chimneys on the side walls. At the time of the survey in August 1992, the estate office was unoccupied. This building is included for its group value with the former Town Hall on King Street.
