Description

The Church of St George is a church located on Church Street in Altrincham. The base of the tower dates back to possibly 1799, while the tower and spire were completed in 1874. The chancel was added in 1886, and significant rebuilding was finished around 1897. The nave was designed by the architectural firm Paley and Austin. The church is constructed of red brick with terracotta decorations, featuring a slate spire and clay tile roofs.

The layout includes a nave, aisles, a west tower, and a porch, along with a polygonal chancel that has a vestry and a side chapel. It has a six-bay clerestory and aisles with stone bands, flat buttresses, and coupled semi-circular headed windows with hoodmoulds, except for the north side, which incorporates stained glass and semi-circular headed windows with stone tracery from the former church. The three-stage tower features a spire, recessed arched openings to the belfry, a blind arcade above, and corbelled brick eaves. The chancel is adorned with tall semi-circular headed lights with terracotta enrichments and a three-light east window beneath a decorated gable.

Inside, the church has a moulded brick semi-circular arched nave arcade supported by circular columns with moulded capitals and bases. The aisles extend on either side of the tower, which is supported by massive brick piers. The roof features king and queen-post trusses with diagonally braced purlins, and there is stained glass throughout the interior.
