Description
The railway tunnel portal, built between 1845 and 1849 by AS Jee for the Huddersfield & Manchester Railway, is constructed from buff sandstone. It faces south and is positioned against the hillside, elevated above the road. The design features a single horseshoe arch, which is flanked by polygonal piers with abutments on either side that extend into the steep sides of the cutting.
The arch is composed of alternate giant voussoirs arranged within a two-coursed ring, with walls made of regular-coursed quarry-faced stone. A prominent giant upper course with tooled margins spans the entire structure, topped by an ashlar parapet that features a notable roll moulding at its base.
