Description
The former tollhouse adjacent to Fairfield Top Lock on the Manchester and Ashton Under Lyne Canal dates from the early 19th century. It is constructed of brick and features a slate roof, with a flat-roofed stone extension at the rear. The building consists of a single room. To the right, there is a door topped by a semi-circular fanlight, while to the left, a window beneath a cambered-brick arch has been altered to accommodate the insertion of a door. The tollhouse has a corner chimney stack and coped gables with kneelers. It is included in the listing for its group value.
