Description
The Manchester and Ashton Under Lyne Canal Lock Number 18, also known as Fairfield Top Lock, is a lock built between 1794 and 1797, which was later expanded to a double lock in the 1820s due to increased traffic. The engineer responsible for its design was Benjamin Outram. The earlier lock, located to the south, is constructed of hammer-dressed stone, while the later lock is made of brick with stone dressings. The later lock no longer has gates and now functions as an overflow. The earlier lock features double-leaf head and tail gates, which were replaced in the 1970s along with the hydraulic paddle gear. The walls of the lock have been repaired with brick bands, and boatman's steps have been recessed into the wall. There are wide steps at the tail end of the island. This lock is included for its group value.
