Description
No. 49, Fairfield Square is a late 18th-century inn and stables, now a house and doctor's surgery. The building is constructed of header bond brick with a slate roof. It has a double-depth plan, comprising a main block of four bays and two storeys, with a former stable wing to the rear. A four-panel door is located in the second bay, topped with an overlight, pilasters, and a flat hood. The main façade features two sets of paired sash windows and three single sash windows, all with stone sills, cambered brick arches, and no glazing bars. A 19th-century canted bay window is present in the fourth bay. Three of the five sash windows in the rendered gable end retain glazing bars. There are three ridge chimney stacks. A lower stable wing extends to the rear of the building. It was used as an inn until 1848, and historical records suggest that it was a location where gospel tracts were sometimes left by members of the Moravian community.
