Description
Higher Matley Hall is a house dating from the 17th century, incorporating an earlier timber-framed structure. The exterior is stone cladding with a slate roof. The front of the house, the "head" of the T-shaped design, features three-light double-chamfered stone mullion windows with hoodmoulds on both floors, along with two segmental-headed stone windows, one of which appears to be 20th century. Other mullioned windows on the rest of the house have been heavily restored or are 20th century replacements. A two-story porch with a chamfered door surround is dated 1733, with the date inscribed within a recessed star-shaped panel. The gables and kneelers were replaced in the 20th century. The rear of the house is rendered, and a truncated projecting chimney stack is visible to the left. Inside the head of the T, the original timber framing is visible, featuring diagonally braced main posts. A cambered tie-beam truss with a carved roundel panel on the underside supports a roof structure with curved wind braces.
