Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade II listed church built between 1846 and 1847 by E.H. Shellard for the Church Commissioners. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone and features a slate roof. The church is designed in the Gothic revival style and includes a nave, clerestory, aisles, and chancel. The structure has a six-bay nave and aisles, along with a three-bay chancel that has a projecting plinth and continuous hoodmoulds. Each bay is supported by weathered buttresses and contains paired lancet windows, while the clerestory features spherical triangle windows. The baptistry, which serves as a south porch, projects from the second bay, and there is a priest's door leading to the chancel. The gables are coped with kneelers, and there is a west bellcote. The east window consists of three lancets.
Inside, the church has a double-chamfered nave arcade supported by quatrefoil columns with stiff-leaf capitals. The hammer-beam roof springs from shafts with head stops. There is a west gallery and an organ loft that is elaborately painted. The interior fittings, made of timber and stone, include pews and a font.
