Description
Romiley War Memorial is a First World War memorial located on a traffic island within a raised grassed area at the junction of Stockport Road and Green Lane. It features a tall, red sandstone Latin cross with the monogram IHS carved in relief on an inset circular panel at the center of the north face of the cross-head. The base of the north face of the cross shaft displays the dates 1914 – 1919, also carved in relief on an inset panel. The cross is set upon a tapering, four-sided plinth with a moulded cap, which rests on a square base.
The names of the 65 servicemen who died are inscribed on a plaque of polished grey granite affixed to the north face of the plinth. Below this, a smaller polished grey granite plaque bears the dedication, “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT HE/ LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS.” Both the names and the dedication are presented in raised, leaded lettering.
The entire structure stands on a coursed-stone platform with ashlar quoins that projects forward from the sloping ground.
