Description

Bredbury and Romiley War Memorial is a First World War memorial with later additions for the Second World War. It is situated within a circular area of hardstanding on a traffic island at the junction of Berrycroft Lane, King’s Road, and George Lane in Bredbury.

The memorial features a stone cross fleurée above a moulded collar on a tapering, octagonal shaft that ends in a moulded foot. This shaft rises from an octagonal, two-tiered plinth set on a two-stepped base. The names and inscriptions are incised on the plinth and painted black.

The main inscription is located on the south-east face of the upper-tier of the plinth, stating, "THIS CROSS IS ERECTED/ TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND/ TO THE MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF BREDBURY/ AND ROMILEY/ WHO LAID DOWN/ THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR,/ 1914-1918./ “THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.” The names of 143 servicemen who died in this conflict are listed in columns beneath the name of their village on the other faces of the upper-tier; four faces display the names from Bredbury and three faces show those from Romiley.

The dedication for the Second World War is found on the south-east face of the lower-tier of the plinth, which reads, "THE LOWER TABLETS RECORD/ THE NAMES OF THE MEN OF/ BREDBURY AND ROMILEY/ WHO LAID DOWN/ THEIR LIVES IN THE/ SECOND WORLD WAR,/ 1939-1945." The names of 64 servicemen who died in this conflict are also recorded in columns beneath the name of their village on the remaining faces of the lower-tier; three faces list the names from Bredbury and four faces list those from Romiley, with an additional name from Bredbury included beneath a list from Romiley.
