Description

The Hopton Wood stone memorial cross is located outside the west front of the New Church of All Saints in Marple, near the lychgate and south of the remains of the old church. This memorial takes the form of a tall Celtic cross set on a broad plinth, which features three bronze plaques.

The wheel-head cross is decorated with an interlace pattern carved in relief within the circlet, and a rose at the center of the cross head. On the upper face of the cross shaft, there is an intricate carving of the Tree of Life. Lower down, on the front and rear of the cross shaft, are panels carved in relief that display a pattern similar to heraldic vair. Smaller panels with this decorative motif are also found on the sides of the shaft.

The cross shaft rises from a socket stone that bears inscriptions: on the west face, "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE"; on the south face, "WHO STANDS IF FREEDOM FALL"; and on the north face, "WHO DIES IF ENGLAND LIVE."

The east face of the broad corniced base, which is rectangular in shape, is incised with a dedication that reads: "THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED BY A GRATEFUL TOWNSHIP AND MANY SORROWING RELATIVES AND FRIENDS 1919 THEY LOVED NOT THEIR LIVES UNTO THE DEATH REV: 12: 11." The main dedicatory inscription on the west-facing bronze panel states: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE MARPLE MEN WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 A.D. (NAMES)." Additional names are listed on the north- and south-facing plaques.

The plinth is set on a stepped base, with three steps at the front and two at the rear to accommodate the slope of the ground, along with a paved platform. Low stone posts with a chain surround the cross.
