Description

SJ 99 SW WERNETH OSBORNE STREET Lower Bredbury 1/217 Barn immediately east of Bredbury 29.3.66 Hall

  • II

Barn, now clubhouse. C16. Cruck frames with C19 and C20 brick stone and render walls and asbestos roof. 5 bay barn with numerous 2 and 1 storey additions on 3 sides. Elevations show no signs of the original fabric being largely of C20. 4 virtually complete closed cruck trusses with cruck spurs and collar yokes. The 2 outer crucks have collar beams whereas the inner ones do not; they are of unusually large timbers and show signs of 2 storied ends to a central full-height threshing floor. Through purlins carry original roof rafters. The barn served Bredbury Hall, built 1570, and may be of a similar date.
