Description

The Irlam and Cadishead War Memorial, built in 1949, commemorates those who served in the First and Second World Wars. It was designed by Henry Nurse and features a bronze figure by John Cassidy, which was taken from an earlier First World War memorial.

The memorial consists of a central rectangular pedestal made of ashlar stone, with a plain plinth and frieze. On the dado, there is a stone plaque inscribed with the words: "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." Atop the pedestal is a plain ashlar plinth that supports a bronze figure of Winged Victory, standing on a globe. She holds a bouquet of flowers in her left hand and a palm branch in her right hand.

On either side of the pedestal, there are ashlar walls with plain plinths and moulded cornices, each fronted by a low ashlar wreath stand. The left wall is inscribed with "1914-1918" and features two bronze plaques adorned with palm leaves. These plaques read: "IN MEMORY AND PERPETUAL HONOUR OF THE BRAVE MEN OF IRLAM AND CADISHEAD DISTRICT WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918" followed by the names of the fallen. The right wall is inscribed with "1939-1945" and also has two bronze plaques with matching palm leaf decorations. One plaque states: "IN MEMORY AND PERPETUAL HONOUR OF THE BRAVE MEN OF IRLAM WHO FELL IN THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945" and the other reads: "IN MEMORY AND PERPETUAL HONOUR OF THE BRAVE MEN OF CADISHEAD WHO FELL IN THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945," each followed by names.

The entire memorial is elevated on a two-step podium made of ashlar stone, with a crazy-paving surface on the upper step.
