Description

This footbridge, built in 1901 for the 1st Earl of Ellesmere, spans the Bridgewater Canal between Barton Road and The Green. It is constructed of wrought iron with dressed stone abutments. The bridge features segmental-arched iron girders that support a cobbled deck, which is held up by U-shaped secondary beams. Cast-iron posts support four rails that create the side walls of the bridge. The abutments have side walls that sweep outwards and include triangular passing places, round terminating piers, and coping stones.
