Description

This is a former oil and powder store, built in 1852 for canal and mining operations. It was later converted into flats in 1986. The building is constructed of English garden wall bond brick with a slate roof and stone dressings, and has a T-shaped plan extending over seven bays and two storeys. The design evokes the appearance of a medieval tithe barn.

The front of the building features large segmental-arched ground floor openings, each containing a glazed door and window, with a three-light window above, all dating to the 1986 conversion. Weathered buttresses are angled at the corners. The gables are coped and topped with finials. A 20th-century oriel window is located in the right gable, displaying a datestone and flanked by original window openings with flat brick arches. Additions matching the original style were built to the rear in 1986.

Inside, the ground floor features an impressive cross-vaulted brick construction. The substantial wall and floor construction was intended to mitigate damage in the event of an explosion.
