Description
Fountain, built in 1905, made of brick with stone dressings. It features a central carved stone bowl on a scrolled pedestal, which stands on a platform of four steps. The fountain is surrounded by a brick superstructure that includes arched openings on each side, weathered diagonal buttresses, an entablature with debased triglyphs, a cornice, and a pierced parapet. It was erected by the 3rd Earl of Ellesmere in memory of the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater shortly after the removal of the former factory that stood on the site of the green. The fountain is located at the base of the former factory chimney and incorporates bricks from it. A long Latin inscription on one of the steps begins with: "I was a lofty column, where panting nostrils were made by the skill of the Cyclops, the glory of the smith."
