Description

SD 80 NE, 2/23

MIDDLETON, ROCHDALE ROAD (north-west side), Nos. 51 and 53

II

Pair of semi-detached houses. 1900. By Edgar Wood. Brick with stone dressings and graduated stone slate roof. Total of four bays and two storeys (plus attics) with paired central doorways and a wing to rear. Projecting plinth and stone quoins. Central doors have leaded upper panels and leaded overlights with moulded lintels in the Yorkshire tradition above flat hoods. Symmetry is avoided by having single storey canted bay window in bay 4 as opposed to a 2-storey one in bay 1 which breaks through the overhanging eaves: The windows have chamfered stone mullions and leaded lights, they have transoms on the ground floor and are of 2 or 4 lights. Gabled dormer windows. Gable chimney stacks. Leaded casements below segmental brick arches to sides and rear.
