Description
The Church of Saint Aidan is a church built between 1913 and 1915 by the architect Temple Moore. It features random rubble construction with clay tile and slate roofs. The nave and north aisle share a single roof, while the south aisle has a separate double-pitched roof. The church includes a central west tower and a higher chancel flanked by chapels on the north and south, both featuring a clerestory and triforium.
On the south elevation, the four-bay aisle displays rough quoins, a coped eaves parapet, continuous sill moulding, and alternating one and two-light lancet window openings. There is a lean-to porch on the west side with a pointed arch. A two-bay chapel, which is otherwise continuous, is distinguished by a projecting square castellated stair turret that includes an external semi-octagonal stone pulpit on a heavy bracket and small stair lights. There is also a priest's door leading to the chapel.
The tower features a stair turret designed as a heavy buttress, a west doorway with three lancet openings above, and two-light openings with plate tracery and hoodmoulds at the bell stage, topped with bold castellations. The north aisle roof slopes down to meet 20th-century school buildings. The chancel clerestory has paired lancets, and the east window consists of three lancets beneath a semi-circular hoodmould, which extends over two smaller side lancets. The gable is supported by heavy weathered buttresses.
Inside, the unmoulded nave arches are supported by heavy square piers, with the piers carrying the tower being particularly massive. The chancel triforium features pointed arches on the north side and round arches on the south side. The east window and reredos were both designed by Temple Moore, making this church a significant architectural work by one of the leading architects of the early 20th century.
