Description
Rochdale Canal Lock Number 52 and the towpath bridge were built between 1794 and 1804, designed by engineer William Jessop. The lock features dressed stone with random stone used for the bridge's parapet walls. The upper gates of the lock have been fully overhauled, while the lower gates no longer exist, leaving only the recess. Many of the heavy stones in the retaining walls have letters inscribed on their faces. The bridge, which has a segmental arch, has parapet walls that appear to be largely rebuilt.
