Description

Rochdale Canal Lock Number 53 is a lock built between 1794 and 1804, designed by engineer William Jessop. It is constructed from dressed stone. The lock mouth features cast iron lipping, and while the upper gates have been fully overhauled, the lower gates are no longer present, leaving only the recesses. Below these recesses, the masonry appears to be of a later date, with heavy verge stones sloping down to the lower level. The winding gear is no longer in existence.
