Description
Barcroft is a house built in 1894 by Edgar Wood. It features rendered brick with stone dressings and a clay tile roof, which replaced the original stone slate. The building is a long, two-storey structure with a picturesque design, including a projecting gable wing at the front and a single-storey brick wing at the rear left. A driveway runs through an opening on the left side, providing access to the rear.
The house has four bays. The first bay features a flat-faced mullioned bay window on the first floor, located above the driveway, which does not appear in the architect's original drawings. The second bay includes a raked strapwork band that continues around the rest of the house, with stepped windows on two levels that illuminate the staircase. The third bay has an elliptical-headed doorway with an inscribed lintel, a decorative strapwork panel, and the original door, positioned next to a low 5-light mullion and transom window. This bay's gable displays a projecting bargeboard and an applied decorative timber pattern. The fourth bay features a diagonally set Tudor bay window, square in plan, with mullion and transom windows on the ground floor and mullioned windows on the first floor. All windows are fitted with leaded lights. The house reflects Wood's aim to revive traditional building techniques.
