Description

Rhodes Schools is a school building constructed in 1884, designed by Edgar Wood, with later additions. It is made of brick and topped with a slate roof. The structure features 20 bays and stands two storeys tall, with a hall located on the first floor above an arcaded undercroft. There are 4-bay additions on both the left and right sides, as well as boys' and girls' porches at the rear that provide access to the first floor.

The building has a symmetrical façade with eight round-arched openings on the lower level, three of which are now windows. The first floor is adorned with a dogtooth band, and the second floor features casement windows with segmental brick arches and stone sills. The outer four bays on each end are advanced and gabled, while the additions also have gabled roofs and similar architectural details. A stone inscription reads, "Rhodes Schools built in affectionate remembrance of Salis Arthur Schwabe by his mother and brothers." The roof is steeply pitched, with a crested ridge tile and ridge chimney stacks. Although a central bellcote is no longer present, there are four large gabled dormer windows at the rear. Inside, the building boasts large roof trusses with king posts and braced tie beams.
