Description
The Church of the Holy Trinity is a church built between 1861 and 1862 by George Shaw of Uppermill. It is constructed of coursed square stone with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs with stone-coped gables, showcasing a Decorated style. The church includes a chancel with an apse, a south vestry, a transept, a nave, and a south porch. The polygonal apse has an east trefoil and lancets on either side, while the nave's north side features 2-light windows. The south vestry contains a 2-light window and a door, and the double-gabled south transept has 3-light windows. The aisle also has 2-light windows and a door leading to the south porch. The west end is marked by a 4-light window and a bellcote on the gable.
Inside, the chancel boasts a finely carved stone reredos with a relief of the Last Supper set within an openwork canopy. There are choir stalls with panelling behind, a low stone and marble chancel screen, and a roof supported by curved braces rising from stone corbels. The apse windows feature stained glass, as do some of the nave windows, including the west window. The nave has a carved pulpit on a stone base and an octagonal font, with a roof of arched braces also rising from stone corbels. The south transept contains stained glass and features a significant First World War memorial made up of large brass plaques on the sides of the arcade piers. These plaques list the names of parishioners who fought in the war, with those who did not return inscribed in red, uniquely organized by the street from which they came. This small, well-detailed church is notable for its interesting fittings, stained glass, and a War Memorial of special significance.
