Description

Wardle House and Whitaker Mill Farmhouse is a mill and mill owner's house, now divided into two dwellings. Built in 1815, as indicated by a datestone inscribed "JW", it was constructed for James Whitaker. The building combines a 3-storey mill with a 2-storey master's house on the right-hand side. The mill section has ten bays, each with a loading door for each of the three floors, with a particularly large loading door in bay 6. Square-shaped windows are evenly spaced on the first and second floors, with a sill band marking the first-floor level. The ground floor windows are 2 and 3-light flat-faced mullion windows and the entrance doorway features square-cut monolithic jambs and lintel. A chimney stack is located on the right-hand gable. The building is constructed of watershot stone and has a stone slate roof.
