Description

Higher Castleshaw Cottages are two mid-18th century cottages located in Saddleworth. They are constructed from hammer-dressed watershot stone and feature a graduated stone slate roof. Each cottage consists of one room on each of two floors. The right-hand cottage is the older of the two and includes quoins, a later door inserted to the right, a three-light recessed cavetto-moulded mullion window on the ground floor, and a later window opening on the first floor. The left-hand cottage also has quoins, a door to the right with a square-cut surround, and a three-light window on each floor similar to the right cottage. There is a small lean-to addition on the right gable of the left cottage. Both cottages have a large door opening at the rear first floor level; one is from the 20th century and the other dates back to the 18th century with a chamfered surround.
