Description

Cartref Cottage comprises two houses and an adjoining cottage, dating from the late 18th century. The building is constructed from hammer-dressed watershot stone with a graduated stone slate roof. Originally a double-depth house with a central entrance, it now presents as two separate dwellings, formerly of three storeys but now two. A small, single-depth cottage is attached to the right. The front elevation features quoins and a central, square-cut door surround, flanked by three- and four-light windows. A workshop window on the first floor comprises thirteen lights, with one blocked light and king mullions. All windows have recessed, flat-faced stone mullions. Plain eaves gutter brackets are a later, 19th-century addition. A gable chimney stack sits on the front slope of the roof, and a lean-to porch is against the left gable. The rear elevation has similar window arrangements. The cottage features a dressed, chamfered door surround, a three-light recessed chamfered mullion ground floor window, a four-light flat-faced mullion first floor window, and quoins. A two-light recessed chamfered mullion window is visible in the gable-end.
