Description
The Huddersfield Narrow Canal Lock, located adjacent to Ward Road bridge in Diggle, is a narrow pond lock that dates from between 1799 and 1810 and was designed by Benjamin Outram. It was restored in 1991. The lock features offside stone steps leading down to ground level at the tail. There is a single wooden tail beam and a pair of raking cast-iron ground paddle gearings on the offside. The chamber is constructed of hammer dressed stone, which includes mason's marks. The dressed copings appear to be of early 19th century origin. Additionally, there is a single wooden head gate, also equipped with paired raking cast-iron ground paddle gearing, and a wooden tail bridge with black and white handrails.
