Description
W.H. Shaw Ltd. Dobcross Works Office Building is a 19th-century office building constructed in 1890 for Hutchinson and Hollingworth. It features ashlar stonework and a Westmorland slate roof, designed in a Gothic style. The building has five by three bays and stands two storeys tall, plus attics. The elevation is asymmetrical, with the second and fourth bays being advanced; the fourth bay includes the entrance and a clock tower, while the other bays are gabled.
The structure has a rock-faced plinth and a first-floor band. Each bay on both floors contains a 2, 3, or 5-light chamfered mullion window with shouldered heads and leaded glass in the upper sections. The gables are coped and feature kneelers, ornate finials, and 1 or 2-light windows with cusped heads. The entrance door at the base of the tower has an overlight with a keystone, flanking pilasters, a cornice, dies with ball finials, and entwined initials above a scroll. The four-stage tower rises above, topped with a machicolated stage that includes clock faces, gables, corner pinnacles, and a Lombardic roof with a decorative iron crown. The building also has clustered, diagonally set ridge chimney stacks.
Inside, the office building remains largely unaltered, featuring original glazed tile skirtings, panelled doors, cornices, a cast iron staircase, and a decorative cast iron spiral staircase. The "Dobcross Loom" produced here was exported worldwide in the late 19th century.
