Description
This building is a row of three cottages located at 174-178 Ladybarn Lane in Manchester, dating from the late 18th century and altered over time. The cottages are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with a slate roof and have a rectangular single-depth plan. Nos. 174 and 176 are single-fronted and make up the northern half of the range, while No. 178 is double-fronted and forms the southern half.
The cottages are two storeys high and feature four windows on the first floor. Nos. 174 and 176 have early 20th-century doorways and small rectangular bay windows at the ground floor, all under a continuous verandah or porch supported by wooden columns with wooden balustrading. Each of these cottages has one window on the first floor, with No. 174 having a small-paned horizontal sliding sash and No. 176 having altered glazing. No. 178 has a board door, one window to the left and two to the right at the ground floor, along with two additional windows on the first floor, all of which are horizontal sliding sashes with small panes.
There is a ridge chimney located at the junction of Nos. 176 and 178, as well as gable chimneys. The rear of No. 178 features horizontal sliding sashes, while No. 176 has a single-storey lean-to back extension. Inside No. 178, the original layout included two rooms on each floor, with the right-side ground floor room and the left-side first floor room being very large. The upper room was formerly open to the staircase, which ascends along the rear wall from the rear left corner. The interior also retains original board doors with L-hinges.
