Description
The former Adult Deaf and Dumb Institute, built in 1878 by John Lowe, is a two-storey building with a basement, constructed from sandstone ashlar and topped with a slate roof. Designed in the Gothic style, it features three symmetrical bays with a gabled center. The ground floor has a frieze inscribed with "ADULT DEAF & DUMB INSTITUTE" and corner pilasters leading to the first floor.
The central gable includes kneelers and an apex cross, with parapets on the outer bays. A prominent doorway has a large, two-centred arched head with intricate moulding, carved imposts, a hoodmould, and a carved shield depicting an open hand. Above the doorway is a wrought-iron lamp bracket. On the first floor, a large two-centred arch houses a pedestal with a sculpture of the Good Shepherd, set beneath a cusped and gabled canopy, flanked by arched lights and roundels. The raised lettering "A:D 1878" appears on either side of the sculpture, and the gable features three small lancets beneath a semi-circular relieving arch.
The outer bays have coupled two-centred arched windows on the ground floor and two-centred arched windows on the first floor, each with two arched lights and a quatrefoil in the head, complete with hoodmoulds and gablets above. Gable chimneys are also present. The building forms a group with the Grosvenor Picture Palace located to the right.
