Description

The former town hall facade of the Mabel Tylecote Building at Manchester Metropolitan University was built between 1830 and 1831 by architect Richard Lane. This structure, which is in the Greek Revival style, is made of sandstone ashlar and features two storeys with a symmetrical arrangement of bays: 1:2:3:2:1. The outer bays project slightly forward, and there is a central three-bay portico. The ground floor has channelled rustication, with pilasters on the end bays, and an entablature that includes a plain frieze, cornice, and parapet.

The tetrastyle portico is supported by fluted Doric columns, which have four paterae on the frieze and stand on a base of three steps. The central doorway features a moulded architrave, panelled double doors, and a rectangular two-pane overlight. There are smaller doorways in the second and eighth bays, designed in a similar style. The facade also includes 12-pane sashed windows on both floors with plain reveals. This building forms a group with the former Manchester Polytechnic School of Art located to the right.
