Description

The Dalton Statue, located in the forecourt of Dalton College in Manchester, is a Grade II listed statue of John Dalton, who lived from 1766 to 1844 and was a notable chemist and physicist. Created in 1854 by William Theed the younger, the statue is made of bronze and is mounted on a stone plinth. It depicts a seated figure of Dalton dressed in a draped academic gown and knee-breeches. The base of the statue is inscribed with "Cast by Robinson & Cottam, Pimlico, London." John Dalton is known for establishing the 19th-century theory that atoms are the smallest particles of matter, a theory that was later revised in 1897 by J.J. Thomson. The statue was moved to its current location from Piccadilly Gardens in 1961, coinciding with the completion of Dalton College.
