Statue of John Dalton (1766-1844), chemist and physicist. 1854, by William Theed the younger. Bronze statue on stone plinth. Seated figure wearing draped academic gown and knee-breaches. Base inscribed "Cast by Robinson & Cottam, Pimlico, London". History: John Dalton established the C19 theory that atoms were the smallest particles of matter (superseded in 1897 by the work of J.J.Thomson). Statue removed to this site from Piccadilly Gardens in 1961, on completion of Dalton College.
