Description

The building comprises a church and an institute, integrated into a single structure at 158-168 West Regent Street, Glasgow. The church was designed by Norman A Dick of Burnet Son and Dick around 1929, while the institute was built by Robert Duncan in 1893-4. The building has a six-bay, five-bay arrangement over three storeys and a basement. It features a polished ashlar plinth, and sash windows with plate glass. A cornice runs along the ground floor, and another serves as the cill band for the first floor; the eaves have a plain entablature, topped by a slate roof.

The west-facing elevation, onto West George Street, displays the church in the three western bays, with the central bays advanced forward and the outer bays recessed at ground floor level. The main entrance has an ogee hoodmould with label stops, a blocked archivolt, and two narrow, hoodmoulded lights on either side. Upper floors feature plain, recessed windows with string courses linking them. A central gable to the first floor, surmounted by a cross, is flanked by tabernacles supported by corbels rising from buttresses.

The three eastern bays of the west-facing elevation belong to the institute and have canted outer bays extending through the ground and first floors. The central entrance, at the head of steps, overhangs the basement, with flanking polygonal piers and a corniced gablet containing ball finials. An arched entry is surrounded by coupled colonettes and a sculpted archivolt, with a raised, architraved panel above bearing the lettering "INSTITUTE FOR ADULT DEAF AND DUMB" along with antefixae and an acroterion. The ground floor outer bays have moulded cill bands, panelled aprons, and margined windows, repeated above with decorated pilaster strips and arched windows. The third floor has solid decorated balconies, recessed windows with pilaster mullions, and "pepper-pot" turrets rising through a steep hipped roof.

The elevation facing West Campbell Street features a bay arrangement of 1-3-1, with a lower entrance bay to the north; a blank, panelled first bay to the south, and a large stack at the gable head. Central bays contain a shallow canted bay with a pilaster mullioned window on the ground floor and a plain single-light window to the left. The first floor has a lettered frieze reading “INSTITUTE FOR ADULT DEAF AND DUMB 1893,” with three plain, recessed, margined windows above. The upper floors have a three-light window with pilaster mullions on the ground floor and plain, single-light windows with recessed margins. The gable is pedimented, with antefixae and a diminutive apex pediment, while the northern entrance bay is pedimented and arched, blank at the first floor, with a tall, corniced wallhead stack in the third bay from the north.
