Description
Cheetham Town Hall, now a former town hall, was built between 1853 and 1855 by T. Bird. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring sandstone dressings and slate roofs. The building has an approximately rectangular plan with side wings and is designed in the Italianate style. It stands two storeys tall and has a symmetrical facade with a layout of 2:3:2 bays, where the central section projects forward, flanked by 1- and 2-bay side wings. The exterior includes a stone plinth, rusticated quoins, a first-floor sill-band, a prominent cornice supported by moulded wooden brackets, a brick parapet, and hipped roofs with chimneys on the side walls.
On the ground floor, there is a central round-headed doorway with an ornate stone surround and panelled double doors, along with round-headed windows featuring stone architraves. Attached to the centre, slightly offset to the left, is an added three-bay iron porte-cochere supported by slender columns, which has open-work spandrels, a moulded cornice with finials, open-work cresting, and a mono-pitched glazed roof with an elaborate wrought-iron ornamental balcony at the back. The first floor is adorned with tall sashed windows that have shouldered architraves; the central window features a cornice on consoles, while the others have blank stone panels above. The side wings are set back and lower, designed in a similar style. The interior has not been inspected. The building forms a group with the Town Hall Annexe to the right.
