Description

The Manchester Jewish Museum, originally the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue, was built in 1889 by Edward Salomons. This building features a T-shaped plan, constructed from red brick with sandstone dressings and slate roofs. The main structure is rectangular and positioned at right angles to Cheetham Hill Road, with flanking wings that enhance the gabled facade.

While the overall design is plain, it incorporates elaborate Spanish and Saracenic motifs. The building is two storeys high and consists of three symmetrical bays, with the central bay slightly projecting. It has a plinth and decorative diaper bands. The central entrance boasts a large two-centred arched doorway flanked by small triangular-headed lancet windows. Above the doorway is a recessed door with a banded lintel. The first floor features an arcaded five-light window with shafts and arched lights, adorned with linked segmental hoodmoulds, sill- and head-bands, and a cinquefoil motif at the center, topped with dentilled coping and an apex finial.

The side wings are gabled at right angles to the main structure, with the right wing containing a staircase. They feature ornamented first-floor bands, three-light windows at ground level, and two-light windows above, all topped with gable copings and apex finials. The side walls of the main range have low plain segmental-headed windows on the ground floor and circular windows above, most of which contain stained glass. The interior has not been inspected.
