Description

The former Cheetham Town Hall Annexe, built between 1861 and 1862, originally served as a Poor Law Union office. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring sandstone dressings and hipped slate roofs with side-wall chimneys. The building has a rectangular plan and is designed in the Italianate style, standing one and two storeys high with a symmetrical façade that includes a two-storey central section flanked by one-storey side wings.

The front features a plinth, frieze, and cornice that extend across the first floor, with the frieze of the central block inscribed "PRESTWICH UNION OFFICES." A prominent modillioned cornice and a parapet with balustrades enhance the building's profile. The central entrance boasts a round-headed doorway with a channelled stone surround and panelled double doors, sheltered by a square porch supported by pairs of fluted columns with debased Ionic capitals, a bracketed cornice, and a panelled parapet topped with a ball finial (though the former finial to the right is now missing).

At the ground floor, there are two square-headed windows, while the first floor features three round-headed windows, all adorned with shouldered architraves. The first-floor windows have enriched friezes and dentilled cornices, with the central window showcasing a large carved keystone and a wreath crest. The single-storey side bays are highlighted by Venetian windows set in elaborate stone surrounds that include pilasters, mutule cornices, and panelled parapets topped with urn finials. All windows were boarded at the time of the survey. The building forms a group with the former Cheetham Town Hall located to the left.
