Description
The Former Boys' Prison Block of HMP Manchester, originally built as a women's prison between 1866 and 1868 by architect Alfred Waterhouse, is a notable example of Victorian architecture. Constructed from red brick with stone dressings and topped with a slate roof, the building features a cruciform plan with wings that extend from an octagonal central concourse. This concourse is distinguished by a clerestory, which includes a three-light stone mullioned window on each side, a corbel table at the eaves, tourelles at each corner, and a pointed roof. The four-storey wings are characterized by ranges of cell windows that have stone sills and cambered stone heads.
