Description

The barn at Dry Gap Farm dates to the 16th and 17th centuries, with later 20th-century rafters and a roof covering. It is constructed of coursed squared rubble stone, with heavy quoins. The barn has a four-bay plan, containing three cruck trusses, and a west-side aisle extends over two of the southern bays with a catslide roof. A cart entrance is located on the west side between the second and third cruck trusses, featuring a wooden lintel and dressed quoin jamb on the north side, with 20th-century doors. A similar cart entrance is on the east side with a dressed stone quoin jamb on the south. A small doorway with stone jambs and lintel, partially blocked, is situated at the north end of the east side, alongside further small doors at either end of the aisle. There are three windows on the west side. An externally visible straight joint in the stonework is immediately north of the third cruck truss. Inside, the barn has three cruck trusses with tie-beams, collars, and yokes, all pegged. Spurs support raised principal rafters, purlins, and wall plates. Some wind-braces are present, but there is no ridge beam. The first and second trusses feature additional spurs, purlins, and studs supporting the aisle roof. Cruck blades rest on brick stylobates on the west side. Later 20th-century timber props and iron clasps support parts of the cruck trusses; internal partitions create horse boxes. The barn has a 20th-century corrugated iron roof with light timber framing and one roof light.
