Description

Brown Hill is a farmhouse that was once three cottages, with a construction date that may date back to 1670, although the datestone is now eroded. The building was constructed in several phases and features roughly coursed and squared red sandstone, with a rendered rear and a concrete tiled roof.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a long, single-depth plan with four windows across the front, roughly divided into three main phases, with the central section possibly being the oldest. The main entrance is located against the left-hand gable, accompanied by a tall window with a heavy yellow sandstone lintel. To the right of the entrance is a smaller window that may have once been part of a larger opening, as indicated by the projecting sill. There is a blocked doorway to the right of this window, which aligns with the chimney and may indicate the position of an original end wall. This blocked doorway features a very roughly cambered timber lintel.

Next to the blocked doorway is a square window and another inserted window against a further straight joint. There is another doorway to the right, which has a cambered stone head that once bore the datestone, along with a small square window beside it. A four-pane sash window with a heavy stone lintel, likely related to an earlier opening, is located further along, followed by a blocked square window. To the right, there is another doorway and a six-pane sash window, along with a blocked window against the right-hand gable wall. The upper windows have likely been inserted or renewed in earlier openings. The interior of the farmhouse has undergone significant alterations, with all openings in the rear wall being either inserted or renewed.
