Description

BOLTON

SD71SW OLD NAN'S LANE 797-1/2/164 (East side) 26/04/74 Brown Hill

GV II

Farmhouse, at one time 3 cottages. Once dated 1670, the datestone now eroded, but built over several phases. Roughly coursed and squared red sandstone rendered to rear, and with concrete tiled roof. EXTERIOR AND PLAN: 2 storeys, a long 4-window range single depth plan, roughly divided into 3 main phases, the central section possibly the earliest. Present entrance against left hand gable, with tall window alongside, with heavy yellow sandstone lintel. Smaller window in what may once have been a larger opening (the sill projects beyond the present window) to the right. Blocked doorway to right of this, against a straight joint which corresponds with the position of the chimney, and therefore possibly an original end wall. Blocked door has very roughly cambered timber lintel. Square window alongside the door and a further window (inserted) against a further straight joint. Doorway to right of this with cambered stone head (once bearing the datestone) and small square window alongside it. 4-pane sash window with heavy stone lintel (probably relating to an earlier opening to its right), and a blocked square window beyond. Doorway and 6-pane sash window to right, and blocked window against right-hand gable wall. Upper windows all probably inserted, or renewed in earlier openings. 2 axial stacks, and a further stack on right-hand gable. INTERIOR: has apparently been considerably altered, and the openings in the rear wall are all inserted or renewed.
